Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, millions of Ukrainian citizens have fled their homes. Some of them are displaced inside the country itself, some have left in order to seek shelter abroad. Others have stayed, and some have returned in order to take up arms to fight against the Russian army. Among these fighters are also many theatre artists. In a project that brings together two actors from Kyiv and an actor from the Schaubühne, Stas Zhyrkov, artistic director of the Left Bank Theatre, Kyiv, and Pavlo Arie, dramaturg and writer, explore the cost of war for an artist. What does it do to your body and your mind to handle a weapon? What does it mean to take up a rifle or a gun, objects designed to inflict damage and to de- stroy – especially if one’s own life has been focused on imagining and creating fictional worlds?
